After More Than 40 Years of Service to the University, Dr. Louis G. Marcoccia Announces His Retirement as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Interim Successor Appointed
As executive vice president and chief financial officer over the last decade, Dr. Louis Marcoccia presided over unprecedented growth, leading a team that has kept Syracuse University’s finances strong. Now, after more than 40 total years of service to his alma mater, Dr. Marcoccia, a 1968 graduate, has announced he will retire from the University. He will conclude his tenure at Syracuse University on June 30.
Dr. Marcoccia began his career at the University in 1975 when he was appointed director of internal audit. Over the course of more than four decades, he progressed to assume greater leadership positions and responsibilities, culminating with his appointment as executive vice president and chief financial officer in 2006.
“It has been a privilege and honor to have served my alma mater as a senior executive,” says Dr. Marcoccia. “Now, I look forward to the next phase of my life.”
During his career, Dr. Marcoccia has led and managed a broad and critical portfolio of operations and programs. Among the many areas he has been responsible for are fiscal matters, business and auxiliary operations of the University, planning and maintenance of University physical resources, including steam and chilled water distribution systems, emergency management, safety, transportation, parking, real estate, mail services and energy management.
“For more than 40 years, Lou has been a vital contributor to nearly every major initiative at the University,” says Chancellor Kent Syverud. “He has dedicated much of his career to Syracuse, he has worked tirelessly to make it a better place, and he has been a great steward of the University—both as a leader and as an alumnus. I appreciate his years of service and wish him well as he begins the next chapter of his life.”
Dr. Marcoccia has led the Business and Facilities Maintenance Services division, which is organized into 12 areas, including the Office of Business, Finance, and Administrative Services; the Office of Audit and Management Advisory Services; the Office of Budget and Planning; the Comptroller’s Office; the Treasurer’s Office; the Office of Purchasing and Real Estate, and Drumlins; Auxiliary Services (Bookstore, Conference Services, Food Services, Housing, I.D. Card Services, Licensing, Meal Plans, Minnowbrook Conference Center and WAER); the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction; Business and Facilities Maintenance Services (Bulk Distribution Center, Mail Services, Materials Distribution, Physical Plant, Printing Services, Warehouse Services and Word Processing). Also included is the Office of Energy Systems and Sustainability Management (Steam Station Complex); Campus Safety and Emergency Services (Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management, Fire and Life Safety, Office of Environmental Health, Risk Management and Regulatory Compliance Services, Threat Assessment and Management Team, and Parking and Transit Services); and the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center.
Prior to assuming the duties of his present position, Dr. Marcoccia held a number of senior leadership positions, including senior vice president for business, finance and administrative services; senior vice president for business and finance; vice president and comptroller; and director of internal audit. Before joining Syracuse University, he spent nearly six years at Price Waterhouse & Co., where he served as a certified public accountant.
For decades, Dr. Marcoccia has dedicated himself to charitable, philanthropic and business activities, both within the campus community and in the Greater Syracuse region. Among his many endeavors, he currently serves as president of the Syracuse Stage Board of Trustees and is a board member of the Upstate Medical University Foundation. He also is a member of the University Hill Corporation. Dr. Marcoccia earned a doctoral degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003, as well as a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in 1969 and 1968, respectively. Dr. Marcoccia also was a member of the 1967 and 1968 Syracuse University varsity baseball teams, and is a 1990 Syracuse University Letter Winner of Distinction.
Following Dr. Marcoccia’s retirement, Gwenn Judge, director of the Office of Budget and Planning, will serve as interim vice president and chief financial officer while a search for the University’s next chief financial officer gets underway.
“Gwenn has a long history of strong leadership at Syracuse,” says Chancellor Syverud. “She is well positioned to lead us through this transition. Gwenn has developed excellent relationships with the University’s senior academic and administrative leaders and possesses a comprehensive understanding of the University’s financial and budgeting systems. I am grateful for her leadership and look forward to working with her in the weeks and months ahead.”
Judge first joined the Office of Budget and Planning in 1987 as a senior budget and planning analyst. She was promoted to associate director in 1999 and has served as director since 2007. Judge’s career at Syracuse University includes more than six years of service as manager of Budget and Business Operations at the College of Law.
