The University’s Los Angeles Semester will launch its first-ever summer program this year.

“Students have been asking us about the possibility of adding a summer option to our program, and so it’s exciting to be able to make it a reality,” says Robin Howard, director of the program.
Beginning May 23, 13 students from five different SU schools and colleges will spend the summer living, learning and working at media companies on the West Coast. The program runs until Aug. 12.
Students participating in this year’s summer program come from the Newhouse School, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Whitman School of Management and the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. As during the regular academic year, the Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Foundation will again offer several merit-based scholarships for students enrolled in the summer program.
Three new courses will be offered as part of the summer program: “Race, Gender and the Media” (COM 346), “The Media Ecosystem in Los Angeles” (TRF 400) and “Digital Media and Innovation in Los Angeles” (ICC 400). Students will also take part in the LA internship course (COM 300).
Courses are taught by Bobbie Eisenstock, a consultant and educator who teaches media and diversity at California State University, Northridge; Steve Bradbury ’80, a 20-plus-year digital innovator and senior executive; and Linda Ellman, a 30-year veteran of the news and entertainment industry.
