Students to Compete in Presentational Speaking Competition April 21

Ten outstanding students from five Syracuse University schools and colleges will compete in the White-Denison Presentational Speaking Competition on Thursday, April 21, at 5:30 p.m. in 001 Life Sciences Building. The competition, which is open to the University community, is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies (CRS) in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA).

The students competing are:

• Dylan Barrera ’17, a marketing management major in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management;
• Markova Casseus ’16, a CRS major in VPA;
• Morgan Cavalcanto ’16, a public relations major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications;
• Hunter Dickerson ’19, a CRS major in VPA;
• Christopher DiMaria ’16, a broadcast and digital journalism major in Newhouse;
• Matthew Gehring ’17, a television, radio, and film major in Newhouse;
• Brooke Glatz ’17, a broadcast and digital journalism major in Newhouse;
• Dana Lussier ’18, an advertising major in Newhouse;
• Chad Singh ’17, an environmental engineering major in the College of Engineering and Computer Science; and
• Fatmawati Tuyulawe ’18, a forensic science major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The students will compete for the following prizes:

• Grand Prize: $500 to the senior who has exhibited the greatest achievement in public speaking
• Champion: $350 to the non-senior who has exhibited the greatest achievement in public speaking
• Exceptional Speaker: $200 to the student in any class who has achieved exceptional success in public speaking

The competition’s judges are David E. Peebles, U.S. magistrate judge for the Northern District of New York; Kathyrn Howe Ruscitto, president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph’s Health; Amos Kiewe, professor of CRS, Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies; and Karen Harrison, associate professor of communication, Onondaga Community College.
