Positive Body Image Focus of Delta Phi Epsilon’s Week of Events
Delta Phi Epsilon wants members of the University community to focus on their inner beauty and encourage others to do the same.
In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, the organization is hosting events this week to promote positive body image and raise awareness for the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). The association seeks to prevent and alleviate the problems of eating disorders and advocates for the development of healthy attitudes, bodies and behaviors.
Some of the events include Treat Yo self Day and a vigil in Hendricks Chapel to commemorate those who have lost their lives to eating disorders and to celebrate those who have recovered. “Trash Your Insecurities” was held Monday, Feb. 22, in Schine Student Center and Post It Note Day was held Tuesday, Feb. 23, both organized to boost positive self-worth.
“Given the pressures many students on campus are feeling, we want to start a larger and more impactful conversation on how we can all come together to encourage one another and recognize our individual, unique worth,” says Cassie Dagostino ’16, president of Delta Phi Epsilon’s Gamma Chapter and a public relations and political science major in the Newhouse School and the College of Arts and Sciences, respectively.
The following are a list of the upcoming events:
- On Wednesday, Feb. 24, from noon to 4 p.m., the organization will host Make-up Free Day at the Life Sciences Complex. Members of Delta Phi Epsilon will be stationed with boxes of makeup remover wipes and encouraging all who walk by to take off their makeup and take pictures, while embracing their true beauty. Simultaneously, students will inform University community members of the efforts of ANAD and raise awareness for everything it stands for.
- Thursday, Feb. 25, is Treat Yo Self Day. Treat Yo Self is a reference to the television show “Parks and Recreation,” and chapter members will spend the day encouraging people to do what makes them happy and to enjoy some treats without worrying about diet and/or body image.
They will be handing out bags of candy to students in Life Sciences from noon to 4 p.m. Each bag will feature encouraging messages about body image. Later that evening, chapter members will be visiting the library to do the same thing.
- At 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, a vigil will be held in Hendricks Chapel in honor of those who have struggled with an eating disorder. The chapter will show its ANAD video promoting positive body image (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4t-XJJj7Qs) and members from the University community are invited to come to the stage and discuss their experiences/struggles/recovery from eating disorders and body image. All are welcome to attend.
At all of the events, Delta Phi Epsilon will be selling purple awareness bracelets for $2 and all money raised will go directly to ANAD, which funds research and provides resources to those suffering and recovering.
