Work by Stefan Marc Zoller G’16 and Brent Michael Erickson G’16, both graduate students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ School of Art, is featured in the new exhibition “Over and Over” at 914Works, 914 E. Genesee St., Syracuse.

The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is on view through Friday, Jan. 29. A closing reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 6-8 p.m.

Memory plays a significant role in the work of both artists in “Over and Over.” This is both in the sense of drawing from a memory and in the use of repetition. The repeated motif in Zoller’s “Interior Witness Group” is based on a nondescript yet familiar space that has been the site of years of memory. Through its repetition, Zoller contemplates and confronts the host of memory to which it has borne witness. Erickson’s “White Noise” presents works both in the present and past as documentation of temporary wall drawings, which no longer exist, are paired next to lithographs to question how the memory of a work can be used to inform new works. “Over and Over” is meant to question the role memory plays in the artist’s studio as well as how these memories can relate to others to create a connection or conversation.

Zoller, who is pursuing a master of fine arts degree in painting, had his first solo exhibition, “Son of the Genesee,” at 914Works in 2014. He had two solo exhibitions at the Michael Sickler Gallery in Syracuse: “Rectangles, Stripes, Doom” in 2014 and “Strength from Below” in 2015. His recent group exhibitions include the “65th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition” at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, N.Y., and the traveling exhibition “A Long History Cut Short” at the Point of Contact Gallery in Syracuse and the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton, N.Y. Erickson is pursuing an M.F.A. in printmaking. Past exhibitions of his work include “Structure” at Printmaking Center of New Jersey in Branchburg; “From the Nest” at John Steffl Gallery, Duluth Arts Institute, Duluth, Minn.; and “North of the 45th Parallel” at DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, Mich. After recently completing a printmaking residency in Puebla, Mexico, he was awarded a scholarship by the Arquetopia Foundation for his research into marble lithography. 914Works is an intimate space for VPA students and faculty to present individual or group exhibitions, readings and small-scale performances. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Because 914Works will be closed during the holidays and Syracuse University’s Green Days, patrons are encouraged to email 914works@syr.edu to confirm that the gallery is open.
