“Macy’s, along with multiple other US retailers are planning to uphold their Thanksgiving hours, recently pledging to open at 6 pm on Turkey Day. Although many might view this as a break with tradition and want the family to hang around the dining table, a huge number of consumers including significant numbers of the the younger digital generation, still prefer to shop in physical stores after the big meal, and are likely to head to the stores,” said Amanda Nicholson, associate dean and professor of retail practice at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management. “Bargains are bargains and we Americans love ’em—whenever they are served up—even on our special ‘non-consumer’ day of the year.”

Professor Nicholson spent 20 years in the retail management field before entering higher education. She began her career with Marks & Spencer in London and then moved to Chicago to work in a variety of department store management positions. Her research interests include the preparation of students with appropriate skills for industry, developing student leadership skills, and the role of communications in the retention of retail employees.

Professor Nicholson is available to speak to media about this and other holiday retail trends. She can be contacted at agnichol@syr.edu or (315) 443-9633.
