Nabatchi Coauthors Book on Public Participation

Tina Nabatchi, associate professor of public administration and international affairs in the Maxwell School, is coauthor of the recently published “Public Participation for 21st Century Democracy,” a book that explores the theory and practice of public participation in decision making and problem solving.

Nabatchi’s teaching and research focus on citizen participation, collaborative governance and conflict resolution. In this new book, she and coauthor Matt Leighninger, executive director of the Deliberative Democracy Consortium, examine how public participation has evolved and offer a practical framework for engaging citizens effectively, along with clear explanations of participation scenarios, tactics and designs. The book also provides a sensible approach to reshaping participation infrastructure to meet the needs of public officials and citizens.

Using illustrative examples of innovative participatory activities and citing numerous sources for additional information, “Public Participation” highlights the need for long-term, cross-sector participation planning.  It also provides guidance for leaders, citizens, activists and others who are determined to improve the ways in which participation and democracy function. The book includes accompanying teacher resources, which are available here.
