“Chief Bobby Maldonado brings the education, experience, career history and reputation as a true leader in campus public safety to Syracuse University,” Callisto says. “His documented performance and success will be an incredible asset to our outstanding team and I am confident he will serve the students, faculty and staff of our campus community with energy and professionalism.”

Maldonado has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and public safety. He has served as captain of the New York State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations, was deputy chief of police for operations at the Rochester Police Department and jail bureau superintendent at the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office. Maldonado is an adjunct faculty member in the department of criminal justice at Rochester Institute of Technology.

As chief of the Department of Public Safety, Maldonado will direct, lead and oversee law enforcement, fire and life safety, security and emergency management staff, and coordinate safety and emergency planning, coordination and response for the campus.

“The Department of Public Safety at Syracuse University has always enjoyed a great reputation of providing professional, innovative and compassionate service to the community it serves,” Maldonado says. “I am honored and grateful to have been selected to serve as the University’s next chief, and look forward to joining the community of students, faculty and staff.”

Maldonado leads a staff of safety and security professionals at Nazareth College, where his duties include leadership and management of all patrol and investigative services, environmental health services, fire safety services, parking and transportation services and physical security services. His current role also includes oversight of the Jeanne Clery Act, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act and collaboration with the college’s Title IX coordinator.

Maldonado holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Cornell University and a master of arts degree in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Albany.

Maldonado will assume his role on July 27.
