The annual Ten Tons of Love charity drive began on April 23 and continues through May 15. The drive, which collected more than 50 tons of usable clothing and household items last year, provides more than 3,000 families in the Syracuse area with these essentials. Students, faculty and staff are all encouraged to donate items and to volunteer.

“Year after year, I am amazed by the support we receive from the Syracuse University community,” says Elin Riggs, director of the Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services. “Without the generosity of our students, faculty and staff and the time given by our volunteers, we would never be able to help as many families in our community.”

Volunteers are needed to collect items at donation locations across campus and load them on trucks for delivery. The volunteers meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Chaplain’s Suite in Hendricks Chapel, with shifts ending around noon. Team captains are also needed to organize volunteers for pickup routes around campus and work with drivers to ensure all donations are collected. Volunteers are needed April 29-May 15. To sign up, visit the Ten Tons of Love Volunteer Registration.

Everyone is encouraged to donate items for the charity drive. Clothing, household items, children’s toys and books, and accessories are always needed. Donation boxes are located in residence halls, Schine Student Center and Goldstein Student Center. Donations will be delivered to the First English Lutheran Church on James Street, the Rescue Mission and the 3fifteen store on University Avenue for sorting and then distribution across the larger Syracuse community.

For more information, visit the Ten Tons of Love website or contact Riggs at eriggs@syr.edu.
