Wellness Week 2015 Kicks Off April 13

The fourth annual Wellness Week, coordinated by the Office of Health Promotion, will begin on campus on Monday, April 13, with a variety of activities to promote overall wellness among students, faculty and staff.

Wellness weekStudents are encouraged to attend as many events and activities as possible in order to accumulate points in a campus-wide competition.

“The purpose of Wellness Week is to highlight the many health and wellness offerings for students, faculty and staff,” says Katelyn Cowen, director of the Office of Health Promotion. “This is great opportunity to learn about and try new things that can better your overall well-being—your physical, mental and spiritual health.”

The week is made possible through collaboration between several university-wide departments and student organizations.

Popular events from previous years will be hosted again, including the Monday Mile and 5k Run/Walk/Roll and the Paws for Stress therapy dogs.

On Wednesday, April 15, a Health and Wellness Expo will take place in Flanagan Gymnasium to provide the University community with access to the most distinguished local organizations that spotlight healthy products and services. New awareness programs include the “Send Silence Packing” demonstration, a national campaign hosted by Active Minds that brings attention to the incidence and impact of suicide on college campuses.

This is also the first year that Syracuse University’s annual Relay For Life fundraiser will be a part of Wellness Week. Relay is a 12-hour fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society that not only honors cancer survivors, but also raises funds for cancer awareness and remembers those who have lost their battle. This year the relay planning committee has a goal of raising $100,000.

Other activities include free yoga, Zumba, and barefoot training fitness classes; hands-only CPR certification; and meditation opportunities. On April 15, during the expo, there will be a healthier eating demonstration, focusing on packing healthy meals to go.
