Syracuse University’s 2015 Philanthropy Week celebration will culminate with the Orange Circle Awards, honoring members of the SU community who have done extraordinary things in the service of others. The awards will be presented after the Phanstiel Lecture on Thursday, March 26, at 4 p.m., at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center. A reception will follow the award ceremony.

“The 2015 Orange Circle Award winners embody the same giving spirit in their communities that we celebrate here at Syracuse,” says Matt Manfra, SU’s assistant vice president for alumni engagement. “All of our recipients have found ways to combine their passion with a genuine desire to help those less fortunate. They’re inspiring representatives of our SU family, and we’re privileged to recognize them.”

This year’s Orange Circle Award recipients are:

Ruth Schlesinger Sherman ’73

Ruth Schlesinger Sherman ’73

Ruth Schlesinger Sherman ’73

Sherman is chair of the Friends of Leadership and Public Service High School in New York City, which is affiliated with Syracuse University. The school offers programs of academic excellence to students from underserved populations, emphasizing the value of community and public service. The Friends’ work includes the Syracuse University Mentor/Mentee Alliance (SUMMA), offering 10th- through 12th-grade students a relationship that aims to improve both academic and social skills.

Sherman earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the College of Arts and Sciences and a juris doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law. In 1988, she was honored by Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society.

Timi Komonibo G’15

Style Lottery was founded in 2013 by Timi Komonibo G’15, a graduate student studying public diplomacy at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, with her team, Nieves Alvarez G’14 and Alexis Morris G’15.

A sustainable-fashion- and fashion-as-philanthropy-focused nonprofit, Style Lottery is allowing the three members to combine their love for fashion with a desire to empower young women from marginalized communities. The project was a winner in Syracuse’s inaugural Fast Forward Student Competition in 2014.

Before attending Syracuse University, Komonibo taught middle school reading, math enrichment and technology as a Teach for America 2011 Houston Corps member. Alvarez is a graduate of the Newhouse School, and Morris is a graduate student in the Maxwell School.
