Tuesday, Jan. 27, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
To commemorate this event, the Chabad House at Syracuse University will be showing the documentary “Auschwitz and the Allies” on at 7:30 p.m. in 228B Schine Student Center.
On Jan. 27, 1945, Soviet forces liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, discovering the largest Nazi killing center in Europe. Auschwitz has become a symbol of the Holocaust, representing the depths of man’s inhumanity to man.
“Auschwitz and the Allies” examines Hitler’s policy of mass extermination of the Jews, which began in earnest in 1942. It asks how much the Allies knew about the systematic annihilation of the Jews; when they found out; whether they could have done more to stop the genocide. It Includes interviews with key participants, such as the pilots who flew the planes that bombed the IG Farben plant next to Auschwitz, and archive film to reveal many shocking facts about the Holocaust.
