Following the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud of Saudi Arabia earlier today, the father of a Syracuse University alumnus has ascended the throne as the King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Syracuse University alumnus His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman G’99, who received a master of social science degree from the Maxwell School, is the son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz. King Salman served as Saudi Minister of Defense before assuming the throne after his brother’s death.

Prince Sultan, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), chairman of the board of trustees of the Prince Salman Center for Disabilities Research in Riyadh and the first Arab astronaut, was recognized by the University for his many achievements in his many roles. He was awarded Syracuse University’s prestigious Chancellor’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement during a ceremony in 2012. The ceremony took place in the foyer at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

The Chancellor’s Medal is given to individuals in honor of their expertise and contributions to their community, the University and the world. Sultan completed his elementary and secondary education in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He studied at the University of Denver and received a master’s degree from the Maxwell School in 1999.

In 1985, Sultan became the first Arab and Muslim in space as a member of the international crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery. He is also the first member of a royal family in space.

Chancellor Kent Syverud has reached out directly to Prince Sultan to convey and express condolences on the passing of His Royal Highness King Abdullah.
