It’s only the second month of the new academic year and already the College of Arts and Sciences is busily preparing for the 10th annual Winston Fisher Seminar, a weeklong immersion program timed to coincide with spring break 2015.

Winston Fisher

Winston Fisher

Named after Winston Fisher ’96, who majored in philosophy and is now a partner at Fisher Brothers–one of New York’s pre-eminent builders, owners and managers of commercial real estate–the program is open to juniors and seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences. For more information on how to apply, visit http://bit.ly/Z8NUYC  or contact Kathy Zubal -Strang at khzubal@syr.edu. The application deadline is Nov. 3.

The seminar, which will enroll 12-15 students, is an interactive, hands-on program that gives undergraduates an opportunity to hear directly from alumni who have succeeded and continue to succeed in business. Through intimate discussions with various alumni, classes and readings, and culminating with a business plan competition, the seminar seeks to help liberal arts students define their career goals while teaching them how to translate their education to career success in the current job market and global economic environment.

Participating students will be eligible to earn one credit hour (pass/fail) if they meet all requirements. Requirements include four on-campus mandatory classes, required readings, written response papers and, while in New York, development and presentation of a business plan to a small panel of friendly judges. The student deemed to have created the most compelling business plan will be awarded $500.

All expenses are covered, including the cost of travel between Syracuse and New York City, travel within New York City, lodging, meals, supplies and events.  A campus representative will escort the group to all meetings and activities. All locations are in Manhattan.
