The Syracuse University Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service (Shaw Center), Hobart & William Smith Colleges’ Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning and New York Campus Compact are co-hosting an interactive workshop on Community Based Literacy Tutoring Initiatives to explore engaged learning opportunities. Both schools host programs based on the America Reads model, which trains, develops and engages students as citizens and critical players in addressing the challenges of low literacy and graduation rates in urban areas. Host programs have over 40 years combined experience, and are eager to talk with colleagues in the field at any stage of the process, from research to implementation and beyond. Hosts will cover topics such as best practices, leadership development, enhanced student learning and outcomes for community partners. Hosts will facilitate discussion and brainstorming for participants who have existing programs, and also for those who are looking to explore new opportunities.
