A team of five students from The NewHouse, a student-run advertising agency based in the Newhouse School, won first place in the Qatar 2022 Women’s Soccer Challenge advertising competition, presented to the World Cup Supreme Committee in Doha, Qatar.

The students, all advertising majors at Newhouse, competed against undergraduate and graduate students from all over the United States and Canada. Finalists were flown to Doha for a week of sightseeing and rehearsals.

The competition required students to develop an integrated advertising campaign to encourage Qatari girls ages 6-14 to play soccer. The NewHouse team created a campaign called “Find it in Football,” which encourages girls and their parents to experience the physical, mental and cultural benefits of the sport.

The competition was managed by EdVenture Partners in conjunction with the Centre for Integrated Marketing Communications at San Diego State University.

“The NewHouse is a completely extracurricular activity intended to give our students the experience of working in a real advertising agency,” says faculty adviser Ed Russell, associate professor of advertising. “These students organized, researched and developed the winning campaign all on their own. We are all very proud of their efforts and their win.”

The student team was headed by account manager Bryan Chin-Yu Chou and included Gabby Fernandez, Kaitlyn Froboese, Melanie Holohan and Marie Strycharz. Associate professor Beth Egan coached the students and accompanied them to Doha.

Meghan Patenaude, president of The NewHouse, says: “We are so excited to win this international competition and show once again that Newhouse advertising students are simply the best in the world.”

The NewHouse is a 120-person student-run advertising agency open to all Syracuse University students. Members work on about a dozen clients and competitions at a time. In the past, teams from The NewHouse have won EdVenture competitions for Honda and General Motors.
