Biboti Ouikahilo, master African dancer, drummer and choreographer from the Ivory Coast, West Africa, will serve as the dance artist-in-residence, teaching students and community members traditional West African dance.
The annual “Music Beyond Borders: Music Festival and Buffet Dinner” is scheduled to present a rich display of local and cultural artists at the Schine Underground on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 6-8 p.m. Coordinated by the Slutzker Center for International Services within the Division of Student Affairs, this long-standing tradition is part of SU’s celebration of International Education Week and features music, poetry and dance.
The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are available at the Schine Box Office. Audience members are invited to join the artists in a complimentary buffet of diverse ethnic foods as the IBand, led by Professor David Dischaive, provides live music.
“Music Beyond Borders” is the fruition of a collaborative vision led by Syracuse University campus and community partners, including the L.C. Smith School of Engineering and Computer Science, SU Abroad and the Graduate Student Association. Additional partners and supporters of the event include the Global China Connection Association, Fulbright Association (CNY Chapter) and the Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society.
For the third year, Biboti Ouikahilo, master African dancer, drummer and choreographer from the Ivory Coast, West Africa, has served as the dance artist-in-residence, teaching students and community members traditional West African dance. The residency culminates with a piece in the performance.
This year’s film artist-in-residence is Meg Rindfleisch, a Newhouse graduate and professional working in Central New York. Rindfleisch and her SU student team have been preparing the documentaries that precede each performance, making the event a multimedia experience.
