October Turns into WALKTOBER on SU Campus
October is a great time to get out and get moving, and the Department of Recreation Services within the Division of Student Affairs is partnering with the Healthy Monday campaign to host WALKTOBER—a month-long initiative and competition that encourages students, faculty and staff to get active.
The kick-off event is Monday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. on the Quad, where participants will receive WALKTOBER passports and pedometers. A Monday Mile run, open to the campus community, will also leave from the quad at 12:30 p.m.
WALKTOBER welcomes walkers, runners, hikers and joggers from SU, SUNY ESF and SUNY Upstate. Participants are asked to keep track of their distance each week and are encouraged to set weekly goals that challenge their own pace.
Additionally, the initiative serves as a competition, with the most-active participants receiving special prizes. Registration for the initiative is required by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. People can register individually or as a team, office or department.
“Since October is National Walking Month, we’ve initiated this physical activity challenge to help inspire individuals to make the most of the fall season and discover ways to enhance their health and well-being through October and beyond,” says Joseph Lore, director of Recreation Servcies. “However you get from your starting point to your finishing point, you can participate in Walktober. All participants are welcome.”
If registered participants cannot attend the kick-off event to pick up pedometers and passports, the items will be available for pick-up at Recreation Services in 241 Archbold Gymnasium.
WALKTOBER winners will be announced during the RUN Scared Halloween Fun Run/Walk on Monday, Oct. 28, at 5:15 p.m. on the Quad. Participants are encouraged to dress up and come with family and friends. A costume contest, spooky 1-mile walk/roll or 2-mile run/roll are a few of the events that will take place.
