Students will better understand the state of poverty housing in this country and abroad during the SU/ESF Habitat for Humanity chapter’s Shack-A-Thon event this week.

Shack-A-Thon draws student organizations, along with sororities and fraternities, to construct and sponsor a shack on the Quad and then spend time in the structure for three days and two nights. This is SU’s sixth annual Shack-A-Thon.
Each organization that sponsors a shack is responsible for donating $300 on behalf of SU/ESF Habitat for Humanity, says Danielle Benavides ’15, co-director for SU/ESF Habitat for Humanity. All funds raised are donated to Habitat for Humanity for the SU home being built this fall in the City of Syracuse.
Events will be held throughout Shack-A-Thon for participating organizations, and prizes will be given at the end of the week.
On Wednesday, Sept. 25, organizations will meet on the Quad at noon to start building their shacks. They have until 5:30 p.m. to decorate. An opening ceremony will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. The CEO of Habitat for Humanity for New York State will speak about the organization and student groups DanceWorks, EchoTones, The Mandarins and Kalabash will perform.
A Lego-building contest will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, from 1-2 p.m. on the Quad. From 4-5 p.m., a scavenger hunt will be held on the Quad, and a date auction with DJ Suarez will be held from 7-8 p.m. in HBC Gifford Auditorium. A movie screening of “This is the End” will be held from 8-10:30 p.m. on the Quad, presented by University Union.
On Friday, Sept. 27, a Habitat for Humanity award ceremony will be held from noon- 1 p.m. on the Quad.
There are no fees to attend these events. Those participating in the date auction will be members of the student organizations that have participated in Shack-A-Thon.
