Orange Smiles Highlight Students’ Common Bond at SU

Students participate in “Have a Slice Day” on Sept. 4.

On Sept. 4, the LivingSU student team kicked off the new academic year by hosting the event “Have a Slice Day,” to highlight the one thing we all have in common at SU—we are all Orange!

In partnership with SU Food Services, the LivingSU students handed out orange slices to their peers, as well as faculty and staff, in Ernie Davis Dining Center, Schine Student Center, the Quad and other campus locations, capturing photographs and video of them with the orange peels in their mouths as “orange smiles.” The students also handed out flyers with nutritional facts about oranges.

The team strove to deliver the message that along with the diverse and unique experiences of the student body comes a shared, collective experience of being part of the Orange family. This commonality binds students together in a way that the LivingSU student team hopes contributes to laying a shared sense of connection and foundation, so students may feel more willing to open their minds and get to know each other on a personal level.

“It was a special experience to see students take a moment out of their busy day to enjoy an orange slice and take a goofy picture for a campaign that promotes positivity and interconnectedness on campus,” says LivingSU team member Andrea Greenberg, a junior majoring in public relations with a minor in psychology in the Newhouse School and The College of Arts and Sciences, respectively.

The video of the event can be found here.

Photographs from the event can be found here.

Greenberg recaps the event on the LivingSU blog at http://livingsublog.syr.edu/2013/09/have-a-slice-day-recap/.

Supported by the Division of Student Affairs, LivingSU is a multimedia movement to inspire, connect and engage students on campus around living the SU experience. The team is made up of students with a passion to express their artistic talents for social good. Their intention is to affect others in a positive way through thought-provoking content and creative engagement opportunities that encourage students to open their minds and get involved.
