Carnegie Library Reopens After Summer Projects as Upgrades Continue
Carnegie Library reopened for the fall semester Aug. 21 after being closed during the summer for ongoing renovation work. This long-term renovation project, managed by the Syracuse University Libraries and the University’s Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction, will upgrade Carnegie Library for contemporary use and provide needed silent, individualized study space in the Reading Room.
Projects under way this fall include:
- construction of a new elevator, which will comply with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations and improve building accessibility, including making the Reading Room fully accessible for the first time;
- outfitting of library spaces on the second floor to accommodate library services, functions and staff;
- relocation of the library service point and functions to the second floor;
- construction of a new computer cluster adjacent to the Reading Room;
- installation of a new library security system; and
- continued renovation of the Reading Room.
To allow sufficient time to complete this critical work, the Carnegie Reading Room will remain closed until January 2014. For the fall 2013 semester, the libraries are providing services on Carnegie’s first floor, and Room 103 will serve as a temporary reading room.
The libraries are planning a spring 2014 grand opening for the Reading Room, and will share more information about its reopening and other building renovations throughout the fall 2013 semester.
