SU Names Four New Members to the Board of Trustees
As the 2013-14 academic year gets under way, Syracuse University is pleased to announce the election of new trustees to the University’s Board. Four new Board of Trustees members were elected to their positions at the annual Board of Trustees meeting held on campus earlier this year.
“These four individuals bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Board, both as accomplished business and professional leaders, and as deeply engaged citizens,” says Richard L. Thompson, chairman of the SU Board of Trustees. “The depth and breadth of their expertise will prove invaluable at a pivotal time for Syracuse University and for higher education in general. We very much welcome them to the Board and look forward to their positive contributions to our University.”

Steven L. Einhorn ’64, G’67, fellow of the American Institute of Architects, is a proven leader in developing highly profitable, rapidly growing professional service business enterprises. Einhorn’s career highlights include founding, developing and successfully selling two internationally recognized firms: one to a global private equity investment company and the other to a Fortune 50 worldwide technology leader. Now the CEO of Stardog Consulting, he served as both CEO and chairman of EYP Mission Critical Facilities and EYP Architecture and Engineering. He has been honored by his peers with election to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects based upon his design accomplishments and management strategies.
Einhorn has played a leadership role in a wide variety of community activities, having served on numerous boards as a member, an officer and president. These include president of the board of directors for the University Foundation of the University at Albany, president of the board of trustees for Congregation Beth Emeth, designer of the Albany Holocaust Memorial and recipient of the David Ben Gurion Award for his commitment to Israel.
For Syracuse University, Einhorn serves on the Architecture Advisory Board and is a member of the Benefactor and Visionary Gift Clubs. His wife, Sherry (Goldberg) Einhorn ’65 (Education), was communications coordinator for EYPMCF; their son, Richard S. Einhorn ’92 (Arts and Sciences), is vice president, worldwide, data center consulting, at Hewlett Packard.
Edward J. Pettinella G’76 is president, CEO and director of Home Properties, an S&P 400 company. Traded on the NYSE, the company owns, operates, develops, acquires and rehabilitates apartment communities primarily in coastal Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets. Prior to joining Home Properties in 2001, Pettinella’s business career was in banking, last as president of New York State operations for Charter One Bank and executive vice president of Charter One Financial Inc.
After earning a B.S. in finance/management at SUNY Geneseo in 1973, Pettinella started in the management training program at Rochester Community Savings Bank, moving up the ranks through the investment division to corporate executive vice president and COO by 1997. He helped take the bank public before merging it with Charter One Bank’s New York Division. Pettinella’s professional and civic board involvements include Manning & Napier (NYSE:MN), the Rochester Business Alliance, Lifetime Healthcare Companies, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, National Multi Housing Council, the Urban Land Institute and the SUNY Geneseo Foundation board.
For Syracuse University, Pettinella serves on the Whitman Advisory Council and the Kuhn Real Estate Center Advisory Board. He is a member of the Benefactor and Visionary Gift Clubs and is supportive of Whitman and SU Athletics.
Pettinella and his partner Ann Wallace reside in Rochester, N.Y. Pettinella is the father of Cory M. Pettinella ’09 (Whitman).
Taishoff spent several years working in radio news as a reporter, assignment editor and anchor at WHEN in Syracuse and at WILM in Wilmington, Del. She also worked for Dennis Connor’s “Stars & Stripes” during the America’s Cup in San Diego and in customer service for Mobile Video Services at the U.S. Naval Academy. Her most rewarding role has been as full-time mother to Jackie, Jamey and Maks.
Taishoff has been a volunteer and advocate working with the Easter Seals Foundation, the Junior League of Annapolis, Meals on Wheels, Bay Ridge Christian Church and the Syracuse University Alumni Association. She also serves as a director and vice president of the Taishoff Family Foundation Inc. As part of her work with the foundation, she was instrumental in establishing the Lawrence B. Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education at SU. The goals of the center include working toward the full and equal participation of all college students with developmental disabilities.
Taishoff and her husband, Trustee Robert Taishoff ’86 (Arts and Sciences), were honorary co-chairs of the “Americans with Disabilities Act 20th Anniversary Celebration” at the 2010 Syracuse University Orange Central. The Taishoffs own Annapolis Yacht Sales and Service in Annapolis, Md.
For Syracuse University, Laurie serves as the Alumni Association president and on the Board of the Trustees Advancement and External Affairs Committee.
Kathleen A. Walters ’73 is a senior executive with extensive operating experience in the consumer products and paper industry, both domestically and internationally. She is currently executive vice president of Georgia-Pacific, leading the consumer products group, an organization that contains the largest retail and commercial tissue and tabletop businesses in North America, spanning more than 80 locations and 15,000 employees.
Known for her ability to develop business strategies, Walters has a proven record of leading business groups—in various situations, companies and geographies—to improved earnings from growth through innovation, revenue improvement and cost-efficiency strategies. She is adept at aligning large organizations with a vision for the business while simultaneously understanding operational details that help individual units execute on strategic initiatives.
Prior to her association with Georgia-Pacific, Walters held a number of key leadership positions in Europe and the United States for Kimberly-Clark Corp. and Scott Paper Co., and was CEO of SAPPI Fine Paper North America.
As a member of the Jabil Circuits Inc. (NYSE:JBL) board of directors from 2005-2010, she served as the chair of the compensation committee and on other special committees of the board. As the president and CEO of Sappi Fine Paper North America, she was a management advisor to the Sappi Limited (NYSE:SPP) board of directors. She currently serves on the board of the Georgia Aquarium.
Walters earned an M.B.A., graduating with distinction (in the top 5 percent) from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (1978), with a focus on finance and strategic planning. She received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from SU.
For Syracuse University, Walters—together with her husband Stanley P. Walters ’72 (Arts and Sciences)—has been instrumental in coalescing alumni and garnering community support for University initiatives in Atlanta, where the couple resides. This includes supporting the Cold Case Justice Initiative and the men’s basketball team’s appearance in the NCAA Final Four in 2013. The Walters’ support both the SU Annual Fund and SU Athletics. They are parents of two grown children, Stanley and Elizabeth.
