We invite you for participation in the research project “Alcohol Use among African American College Students.” This study was designed to better understand determinants of alcohol use behavior in college students of African descent. College students of African descent have not been well-represented in many fields of science, which makes our study particularly important to inform the development of prevention efforts to curtail college alcohol use.
To qualify for the study participation, you must (1) be at least 18 years of age, (2) speak English, (3) be a part-time or full-time college student, (4) be of African descent (Black or African American), and (5) have consumed alcohol at least once during the past 30 days.
If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to visit our lab to complete a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask about your alcohol and substance use and your social environment. In addition, you will be asked to donate saliva for genotyping analysis. These tasks will take about 90 minutes of your time.
All information that you provide us will remain anonymous; that is, your personal identifying information will not be attached to your responses and genotypes. If you participate in the entire research project, you will receive $15 for your 90-minutes of time and participation. If you complete only a portion of this project, you will receive payment that is prorated based on the amount of time devoted to this project, rounding up to the nearest half hour. For example, if you participate for about 30 minutes, you will receive $5; if you participate for about 1 hour, you will receive $10.
By donating your time, you can help us to develop strategies to reduce alcohol and substance use in African American college students and improve mental health service for African Americans.
