“Earlier this afternoon, a SU employee who was cleaning up after an event in Eggers Hall found a briefcase that was left behind. Upon closer inspection, the employee found that it contained a pistol. This employee immediately secured the bag and contacted the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
“DPS responded immediately and determined that the gun was legally registered to another university employee who holds a New York State sportsman’s permit for the gun. The employee was located on campus and questioned by DPS, who determined that there was no immediate threat to the campus. The employee indicated that he accidentally brought the pistol onto campus.
“While the pistol was legally registered and permitted, it is a violation of University policy and a crime in New York State for anyone other than a law enforcement officer to bring a firearm on a college campus. The employee was arrested by the Syracuse Police Department, issued an appearance ticket, and has been suspended from University employment.”
“Although there was no threat of harm connected to this incident, as a University we take matters of this kind seriously and will continue to promote a safe and secure campus environment.”
