Students Needed for Community Ambassador Program

commambassdorsThe Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services within the Division of Student Affairs is seeking student applicants for the 2013-2014 Community Ambassador program.

The application and instructions can be downloaded at offcampus.syr.edu. Students must submit their application by April 1.

In an effort to assist students with their transition to off-campus living in the Syracuse University neighborhood, the Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services (OCCS) has created the Community Ambassador program. This program will match successful off-campus students with selected blocks in the University neighborhood. Selected students will serve as an ambassador and role model to the residents of the street they are living on.

Community ambassadors (CA) will provide a point of contact for student-residents on their assigned block, provide access to resources and build community in order to ease the transition to off-campus living. This program is designed to increase the overall achievement and satisfaction of students living in the University neighborhood, as well as provide a leadership opportunity for returning off-campus students. It is a paid leadership position.

“Being a community ambassador is the opportunity to build a social connection with the members of your community, while learning necessary leadership skills that will benefit you in any work setting,” says Bethany Holbrook, senior environmental studies major at SUNY-ESF. “It’s been a great experience!”

Blocks participating in the 2013-14 Community Ambassador program include:

  • Ackerman Avenue
  • Clarendon Street
  • Euclid Avenue
  • Lancaster Avenue
  • Livingston Avenue
  • Ostrom Avenue
  • Maryland Avenue
  • Redfield Place
  • Sumner Avenue
  • Park Point Syracuse

In addition to the Community Ambassador program, OCCS provides all students living off campus or commuting to campus from home with support, information and resource referrals throughout their off-campus housing experience. OCCS is available for in-person assistance at 754 Ostrom Avenue, via phone at 315-443-5489, online at offcampus.syr.edu, and email at offcampus@syr.edu.

For questions or more information, contact Kerry Heckman, program coordinator for OCCS, at kmheckma@syr.edu or 315-443-5489.
