The Syracuse University Archives is pleased to
present an online exhibition titled Gimme an “S”!: A History of
the Block Letter S. The Block “S” made its debut at SU in 1893 and
began a tradition that would create one of the most recognizable logos
in college sports today. The Block “S” was for many years the
insignia of highest athletic achievement at the University. In 2005
Athletic Director Daryl Gross made the Block “S” the official
athletics logo at SU. The exhibition features photographic prints of
sports teams throughout SU’s history who have worn the iconic Block
“S” on their uniforms as well as photos of memorabilia featuring
the Block “S”. All images used come from the University Archives.
The exhibition will be featured on the Archives website beginning
