flyntLarry Flynt, the controversial publisher of Hustler Magazine and long-time First Amendment advocate, will visit Syracuse University on Tuesday, March 5, as a guest of the Newhouse School’s Tully Center for Free Speech. He will speak on “Fighting for the First Amendment” at 5 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. The event is part of the Tully Center’s Distinguished Speakers Series. Follow on Twitter at #FightingforFirst.

Flynt is an outspoken defender of First Amendment rights and chairman of the Hustler brand of properties. Throughout his career, he has been involved in numerous legal battles regarding the regulation of free speech in the United States, including the prominent Supreme Court case Hustler Magazine vs. Falwell (1988), an historic decision that held the interest in protecting free speech surpasses the interest in protecting public figures’ emotions and reputations.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of that famous case, which is one of the most important free speech cases in our history,” says Roy Gutterman, director of the Tully Center. “It will be an honor to be able to talk about this case and others with the man who has fought so hard for these First Amendment principles.”

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required, and will be available from the Schine Box Office starting on Feb. 20 for students and Feb. 26 for the general community. Parking will be available in University Avenue Garage or Booth Garage for $5.

For more information, contact Audrey Burian at 315-443-1930 or aaburian@syr.edu, or see tully.syr.edu.
