Local coverage of Superstorm Sandy included reports on CNY Central and 9WSYR featuring Melissa Ann Green, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), who commented on the impact of high winds with a demonstration of the SU wind tunnel.

The Motley Fool and Daily Finance highlight the partnership between GE and the Institute for Veterans for Military Families (IVMF) to create an employer toolkit, and the IVMF’s “Business Case for Hiring a Veteran: Beyond The Clichés” in a report on GE’s Get Skills To Work (GSTW) program and coalition. IVMF is a partner in GSTW, which aims to train 15,000 vets for skilled manufacturing jobs and is a national multi company commitment to hiring 100,000 veterans by 2015. The toolkit focuses on helping companies to hire veterans.

The new album, “Kin: Songs by Mary Karr and Rodney Crowell,” was reviewed in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Karr, a poet and memoirist, is the Jesse Truesdell Peck Professor of Literature in The College of Arts and Sciences.

A USA Today opinion piece on firearms ownership cites statistics on federal weapons prosecutions from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC).

A New York Times obituary notes the passing of 1939 Newhouse alumnus Chester Hansen, an aide to Gen. Omar Bradley during and after World War II. During the war, Hansen kept diaries, rare at the time for military personnel because of security concerns.

“Self-propelled nematics” research on hydrodynamics and instability by M. Cristina Marchetti, physics professor in The College of Arts and Sciences, is featured in articles in Science Daily and the Product Design and Development magazine.

A major video installation, ”Bill Viola: Liber Insularum” (”The Book of Islands”) by the video artist and 1973 SU alumnus, was reviewed by the New York Times and Artinfo.com. Comprised of 11 large-scale video installations, the works go on view Dec. 5 at the Museum of Contemporary Art one day ahead of the opening of Art Basel.

A lecture by L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean Laura Steinberg on community response to natural disasters was previewed by the Utica Observer-Dispatch. Steinberg’s presentation is planned for Nov. 7 at Hamilton College in Clinton.

The Post-Standard CNY Business Exchange featured the Whitman School’s WISE Women’s Business Center and its director, Joanne Lenweaver. The WISE Women’s Business Center is now located in the Tech Garden in downtown Syracuse.

The Sunday Post-Standard Stars magazine review of the Everson’s “TONY: 2012” group show makes note of the work by Jude Lewis, associate professor of art, design and transmedia in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Department of Foundation. Three Lewis sculptures are included in the show.

CNY Central reported on the annual Greek or Treat event hosted by the SU Greek community Friday welcoming area youth into campus fraternity and sorority houses.
