National media attention on the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) and GE partnership through the Get Skills To Work initiative to recognize, recruit and retain veterans in manufacturing, along with the development of a best practices employer toolkit by the IVMF, and results from a survey conducted by the IVMF and GE on veteran transition to civilian careers, includes coverage of note by the Associated Press, Reuters, DOD/American Forces Press Service, Stars and Stripes, Business Wire, and Bloomberg. Also, the Washington Post, Business News Daily and Planet Engineering reported on the partnership. Additional reports include a second piece from Bloomberg on the survey, an op-ed by GE chairman and CEO Jeffery Immelt in The Daily Beast and an OnlineMBA article that quotes IVMF managing director and co-founder James Schmeling. IVMF executive director and founder Mike Haynie is quoted on efforts to translate veterans’ skills for industry employment in a Wall Street Journal article (subscription required) on initiatives by U.S. corporations to assimilate veterans into the workforce. Eric Kingson, professor, School of Social Work in the Falk College, was interviewed by the Los Angeles Radio Pacifica station for a “Background Briefing” program. Kingson, who served as a policy advisor on two presidential commissions on the future of Social Security, discussed the war on Social Security. A podcast is available here.

Don Dutkowsky, professor of economics at the Maxwell School, is quoted in in a New York Times article on Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the rising jobless rate in the state.

Leonard Burman, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs at the Maxwell School, is quoted in a New York Times article on R. Glenn Hubbard, dean of Columbia Business School and a campaign adviser for presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Kevin Noble Maillard, associate professor in the College of Law, wrote a New York Times “Campaign Stops” segment addressing the gender pay equity question asked of Obama and Romney in Tuesday’s presidential debate.

David Yaffe, assistant professor of English in The College of Arts and Sciences, wrote a Chronicle of Higher Education commentary on teaching the Henry James masterpiece, “The Portrait of a Lady,” and interviewed Steely Dan band member Donald Fagen for the Tablet daily online magazine of Jewish news and culture.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, spoke with WTVN-AM radio (Columbus, Ohio) on the fall TV season’s ratings and new shows and the presidential debates and upcoming election. Also, Thompson is quoted in a National Post article on cyberbullying and spoke with Buffalo’s WBEN-AM for a report on presidential debates.
