“The Past Is Not Past: The Continuing Quest for Racial Justice and Peace,” featuring former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young and human rights advocate Martin Luther King III, will take place Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 1-3 p.m. in Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. The roundtable continues the discussion led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the two panels of the Common Ground for Peace Conference held on Monday, Oct. 8. Both Young and King took part in the Monday panels.
Other speakers will be Linda Carty, associate professor in the Department of African American Studies at SU; and Janis McDonald and Paula Johnson, professors in the SU College of Law and co-directors of the Cold Case Justice Initiative (CCJI). An interdisciplinary project that engages Syracuse University College of Law faculty and students, the CCJI seeks justice for racially motivated murders during the Civil Rights era on behalf of the victims, their families, local communities and society at large.
The panelists will discuss the critical link between justice and peace and ask the question: Can there be peace without justice?
