A New York Times Sunday Review editorial on the role of affirmative action in college admission decisions notes Syracuse University’s efforts in this area and specifically names Scholarship in Action.

Coverage of the “Common Ground for Peace” symposium and the visit by the Dalai Lama to SU includes: Associated Press, YNN, 13WHAM-TV (Rochester), WWTI (Watertown), WKTV (Utica), 9WSYR and Post-Standard recent and earlier reports.

A guest column by Owen Shapiro, professor of art, design and transmedia at the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), appeared in the Sunday Post-Standard Stars magazine, along with expanded listings of Syracuse International Film Festival (SIFF) festival films. Shapiro, who is artistic director of SIFF, notes this year’s theme of peace and social justice is a tribute to Bassel Al Shahade, the SU graduate student and Fulbright Scholar killed in Syria.

The Post-Standard Encore! arts and entertainment section recounts early and influential arts experiences as told by SU’s Shapiro and Syracuse Stage’s Kyle Bass, adjunct professor of drama in VPA.

YNN, the Auburn Citizen and the Skaneateles Journal reported on plans by YNN and the Campbell Institute at SU to co-host an Oct. 29 debate between 24th Congressional District candidates Dan Maffei, Ursula Rozum and incumbent U.S. Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle.

CNBC and Digital Supply Chain reported on pioneering women in the military honored during the recent San Diego offering of the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) conference. V-WISE program manager Meghan Florkowski is quoted. Also, Consumer Media Network cites Aug. 2012 veteran unemployment statistics analyzed and released by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families in its Sept. Employment Situation of Veterans report.

Kheli R. Willetts, professor of African American Studies at The College of Arts and Sciences and executive director of Community Folk Art Center (CFAC), was interviewed on 9WSYR “Bridge Street” about the Lubin House exhibition with artwork featuring CFAC’s 40th anniversary. Willetts also talked on CFAC’s participation in “The Other New York: 2012” biennial exhibition.

Fran Paige and Susan Campbell, teachers at the SU Early Education and Child Care Center, appeared on a 9WSYR “Bridge Street” segment to discuss their new children’s book, “Where’s Liam?”. Paige and Campbell worked with children at EECCC during the creation of the book, incorporating their feedback.

The Greater Binghamton Business Journal reported on the LEED Platinum rating earned for the renovations of the Lincoln Supply Warehouse building on the Near Westside.

Current exhibitions on display at Light Work, including its “TONY: 2012” group show, were reviewed by the Syracuse New Times.

The Syracuse New Times reviewed the SU Drama Department’s production of “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Research by Mark Bowick, professor of physics in The College of Arts and Sciences, is featured in Futurity and Phys.org reports on self-healing curved crystal materials.

FACULTY QUOTES

Mehrzad Boroujerdi, director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in an Associated Press article on Iran’s falling currency and the economic influence of the Revolutionary Guard.

A New York Times sampling of reviews after the first of the presidential debates includes comment from David Driesen, University Professor in the College of Law.

The Times Observer (Warren, Pa.) reported that David M. Crane L’80, professor of practice in the College of Law, will sit on a discussion panel for the debut of the documentary, “Liberty Under the Law: The Robert H. Jackson Story.”

Eric Kingson, professor, School of Social Work in the Falk College, was quoted in a Huffington Post article referencing President Obama and Mitt Romney’s approaches on how to address reform of Social Security.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, spoke with WBZ-AM (Boston) radio on the 50th anniversary of James Bond films.

Anthony Rotolo, assistant professor of practice in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), commented for a CNY Central report on Twitter and social media feedback around the first of the presidential debates.

Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech at the Newhouse School, authored a Post-Standard op-ed on free speech in democratic societies.
