New York Times and Post-Standard reports on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s recent visit to the area noted Syracuse University Chancellor Cantor accompanied him on the tour of public and private economic development projects including the Connective Corridor, Syracuse Stage and housing improvements on the Near West Side.

Foreign Policy magazine reported that Catherine Bertini, professor of public administration at the Maxwell School, will sit on the State Department’s Accountability Review Board investigating the murder of the U.S. ambassador to Libya. The story was also reported by the Post-Standard.

Syracuse University graduate and Commencement speaker Stephen Barton ’12 spoke with WNBC in New York City about his work with Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Barton is also featured in the New York Times and The Guardian because of his role in the national television advertisement campaigning for the group’s “Demand A Plan” initiative.

CNY Central reported on the nearly complete reconstruction of the Remembrance Wall on campus, the memorial honoring victims of Pan Am Flight 103. Judy O’Rourke, director of the Office of Undergraduate Studies; Cara A. Howe, SU’s assistant archivist for the Pan Am 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives; and John Osinski, project director, made remarks on the project.

A Sean Kirst Post-Standard column on the unveiling of a new statue in the city’s Libba Cotton Grove near the folksinger’s Syracuse home notes SU support for the project.

FACULTY QUOTES

Dessa Bergen-Cico, assistant professor of public health in the Falk College Department of Public Health, Food Studies and Nutrition, was quoted in an ABC News story on the synthetic pharmaceutical drug called Smiles and the death of actor Johnny Lewis.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story on the comeback tour of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thompson also spoke with KNX-AM radio in Los Angeles about “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane hosting the 85th annual Academy Awards.

Kim Brown, alumni program coordinator in SU Career Services, is featured in a 9WSYR “Bridge Street” segment on LinkedIn and nonprofit organizations.

Mary Karr, Jesse Truesdell Peck Professor of Literature in The College of Arts and Sciences, and English professor George Saunders were, quoted in a Post-Standard story about former SU professor Junot Diaz being named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow.
