SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Syracuse University is featured in an NBC Today Show”College Challenge” segment on school spirit and social media. The University’s spot in the competition is also noted in WHEC (Rochester), WKTV (Utica), CNY Central and Syracuse.com reports.

A Chronicle of Higher Education Out of Uniform Series article features SU for its work in collaborating with partners both on- and off-campus in bridging the military-civilian divide and helping veterans adjust to post-service life, both in and out of the college classroom. Mike Haynie, executive director and founder of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School and creator of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) national program, is quoted. A related story on how four colleges are addressing veterans’ issues also features SU and quotes Haynie, noting the creation of the EBV at Whitman in 2007 and the IVMF and its new partnership with Google to deliver employment training to veterans.

Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet show Friday featured a segment on the SU Lava Project, organized by the sculpture program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences in The College of Arts and Sciences. The mix of science, art and education investigates creating basaltic lava flows in a controlled, outdoor laboratory environment. Robert Wysocki, VPA assistant professor in sculpture, spoke on the physical properties and aesthetics of the project.

A Los Angeles Times article outlined the life of longtime SU theologian Gabriel Vahanian and noted his passing, naming him a key figure in the “Death of God” movement.

A CNN report on domestic terrorism mentions SU research, along with the New America Foundation.

SU is included in a U.S. News & World Report piece about new offerings for college majors, under new media.

The “Styling an American Family: The 1910s at Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Farms” exhibition in Morris Plains, N.J. is reviewed by Parsippany’s Daily Record. The exhibition feature fashions from SU’s Sue Ann Genet Costume Collection and is curated by Jeffrey Mayer, associate professor and program coordinator of fashion design at VPA.

The Central New York Business Journal reported on fall seminars offered by the SU Veterans Resource Center.

The Sunday Post-Standard Stars magazine features SU-affiliated artwork and venues in its preview of the upcoming Friday opening of “The Other New York: 2012” exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art. The “TONY: 2012” biennial, a community wide arts celebration coordinated by the Everson, spans 14 venues and unconventional spaces across Central New York.

A Saturday Post-Standard article notes Ann Clarke, VPA dean, is a board member of Musical Associates of CNY, a group trying to organize a symphony orchestra for the Syracuse area.

“Lake Effect: Tales of Large Lakes, Arctic Winds and Recurrent Snows” (SU Press, 2012), the latest book by Mark Monmonier, Distinguished Professor of Geography in the Maxwell School, was featured in a Sunday Post-Standard story on Central New York winters.

Jason Dedrick, associate professor at the School of Information Studies (iSchool), is quoted on iPhone 5 profits for an Agence France-Presse article on the Sept. 21 launch and its possible stimulus effect on the U.S. economy, with expected sales of 10 million phones within a few days.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a National Post (Ontario, Canada) article about the video of the Greece, N.Y., school bus monitor Karen Klein going viral; and in a Journal News (White Plains, N.Y.) story on the celebrity of the three Kardashian sisters. Also, Thompson was interviewed for a WTVN-AM (Columbus, Ohio) segment, discussing “60 Minutes” extending its brand to a sports show on the Showtime channel; the impact of Katie Couric’s new daytime talk show; and two new TV shows, “Nashville” from ABC and NBC’s “Revolution.”

A Huffington Post column by Menachem Z. Rosensaft, distinguished visiting lecturer at SU College of Law, discusses the Constitution of the United States as a living document with the capacity to adapt to changing social, political and economic conditions.

Barbara Stripling, assistant professor of practice at the iSchool, is quoted in an Education Week article on the Common Core State Standards adopted by most of the states in country, emphasizing the role of librarians as co-instructors alongside classroom teachers.

A U.S. News & World Report story on iPhone apps for networking in college quotes College of Arts and Sciences senior Chelsea Orcutt.

Chuck Merrihew, vice president of administration and engagement, participated in a Post-Standard question and answer piece about the upcoming Common Ground for Peace events featuring His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Oct. 8-9 at SU.

David Rosen, iSchool graduate student, is quoted in a CNY Central report on the merits of upgrading to the new iPhone 5.

Jane Uzcategui, instructor, nutrition, in the Falk College Department of Public Health, Food Studies and Nutrition, was interviewed by 9WSYR on the new McDonald’s calorie counter menus.

SU juniors Deanna Dimmick and Paul Campbell, from the Newhouse School and College of Arts and Sciences, respectively, are quoted in a CNY Central report on social media in electoral campaigns.
