Syracuse University is featured in an NBC Today Show”College Challenge” segment on school spirit and social media. The University’s spot in the competition is also noted in WHEC (Rochester), WKTV (Utica), CNY Central and Syracuse.com reports.

A Chronicle of Higher Education Out of Uniform Series article features SU for its work in collaborating with partners both on- and off-campus in bridging the military-civilian divide and helping veterans adjust to post-service life, both in and out of the college classroom. Mike Haynie, executive director and founder of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School and creator of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) national program, is quoted. A related story on how four colleges are addressing veterans’ issues also features SU and quotes Haynie, noting the creation of the EBV at Whitman in 2007 and the IVMF and its new partnership with Google to deliver employment training to veterans.

Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet show Friday featured a segment on the SU Lava Project, organized by the sculpture program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences in The College of Arts and Sciences. The mix of science, art and education investigates creating basaltic lava flows in a controlled, outdoor laboratory environment. Robert Wysocki, VPA assistant professor in sculpture, spoke on the physical properties and aesthetics of the project.

A Los Angeles Times article outlined the life of longtime SU theologian Gabriel Vahanian and noted his passing, naming him a key figure in the “Death of God” movement.

A CNN report on domestic terrorism mentions SU research, along with the New America Foundation.

SU is included in a U.S. News & World Report piece about new offerings for college majors, under new media.

The “Styling an American Family: The 1910s at Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Farms” exhibition in Morris Plains, N.J. is reviewed by Parsippany’s Daily Record. The exhibition feature fashions from SU’s Sue Ann Genet Costume Collection and is curated by Jeffrey Mayer, associate professor and program coordinator of fashion design at VPA.

The Central New York Business Journal reported on fall seminars offered by the SU Veterans Resource Center.

The Sunday Post-Standard Stars magazine features SU-affiliated artwork and venues in its preview of the upcoming Friday opening of “The Other New York: 2012” exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art. The “TONY: 2012” biennial, a community wide arts celebration coordinated by the Everson, spans 14 venues and unconventional spaces across Central New York.

A Saturday Post-Standard article notes Ann Clarke, VPA dean, is a board member of Musical Associates of CNY, a group trying to organize a symphony orchestra for the Syracuse area.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I.
