In a new opinion piece for The Huffington Post, Chancellor Cantor writes about the challenges facing higher education and how institutions should take an “outside-in” approach in determining what students and families, the public and society needs from colleges and universities.

University Professor Carl Schramm writes on the connection between universities and economic growth for the 4% Growth Project.

The Post-Standard reported on Syracuse University Trustee Samuel Nappi’s efforts to bring the Dalai Lama to campus for the “Common Ground for Peace” events Oct. 8 and 9. Also, YNN and CNY Central reported on artists coming to the Carrier Dome for the “One World Concert,” in conjunction with the visit.

The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program, founded at SU in 2007 and operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), was mentioned in a Military Times Edge story on entrepreneurial bootcamps and the training they provide veterans to establish or expand  entrepreneurial ambitions.

A trending report by KOKI (Tulsa, Okla.) features the SU Lava Project. The mix of science, art and education investigates the physical properties, aesthetics and educational opportunities of creating basaltic lava flows in a controlled, outdoor laboratory environment. The project is organized by the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Sculpture Program, in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences in The College of Arts and Sciences.

The CNY Business Journal reported on the launch of Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup, a program to help transitioning service members and veterans become entrepreneurs. The pilot program was launched by the IVMF, SBA and U.S Marine Corps on four USMC bases and goes nationwide in 2013. Ray Toenniessen, IVMF director of new initiatives and external relations, is quoted.

SU-affiliated cultural venues, artworks, videos and artists participating in “The Other New York: 2012” exhibition are noted in articles in The Good Life CNY magazine, the Sunday Post-Standard Stars magazine and in a Stars column contributed by the director of the Everson Museum of Art, the institution coordinating the “TONY: 2012” biennial.

The Post-Standard reported on the opening reception for “Iconic Syracuse,” the Connective Corridor and Onondaga Historical Association collaborative billboard project working with SU students and artists.

The Post-Standard noted the passing of T.E. Koshy, SU evangelical chaplain emeritus.

Gary Pavela, director of SU’s Academic Integrity Office, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story on academic integrity policies at Harvard.

Gary Shaheen, IVMF director of employment policy, and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) graduate Liz Perez discussed veterans, poverty and difficulty during post-service transitions for a HuffPost Live segment.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a KYW-AM (Philadelphia) report on the area’s “Made in America” festival and documentary film. Thompson also spoke with WBEN radio in Buffalo about political convention TV viewership, with news delivered and augmented via social media.

For a Business Insider feature, Kim Brown, alumni program coordinator in SU Career Services, discussed Linked In mistakes job seekers and students should avoid.

David Yaffe, assistant professor of English in The College of Arts and Sciences, authored a Daily Beast review of the new studio album from Bob Dylan.

Brenda Wrigley, associate professor and chair of the public relations department at the Newhouse School, commented for a PR Week opinion piece about public relations as a male-dominated industry.

For a 9WSYR report on social media activity during and after the Republican convention, Anthony Rotolo, assistant professor of practice in the School of Information Studies, discussed the iSchool’s following political campaign conversations on Twitter

IVMF executive director and founder Mike Haynie, Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Whitman School, authored a Labor Day op-ed in the Syracuse Post-Standard on the current employment situation and challenges facing America’s post-9/11 military veterans in the midst of a contentious election season and the business case for hiring a veteran.
