SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

I4U News reported on the San Diego offering of Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE), operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families. V-WISE, one of the first federally-funded programs focused on engaging entrepreneurial opportunity for female veterans, was launched by Syracuse University/the Whitman School in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration in 2010.

Smithsonian Magazine and the Daily Mail (U.K.) reported on the SU Lava Project—a mix of science, art and education to investigate the physical properties, aesthetics and educational opportunities of creating basaltic lava flows in a controlled, outdoor laboratory environment. The project is organized by the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Sculpture Program, in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences in The College of Arts and Sciences.

SU is included among participating colleges and universities in a Buffalo News report on Say Yes to Education expanding its college scholarship program for graduates of district and charter schools in the city of Buffalo. Also, a Buffalo News follow-up Saturday editorial on the topic mentions SU.

FACULTY QUOTES

Maxwell School Dean James Steinberg co-authored a Washington Post opinion piece on military policy and strategy, discussing in particular the American overseas Air-Sea Battle military concept.

Rick Burton, the Falk Professor of Sport Management in the Falk College, was quoted by NBC News on the impact of Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal for his endorsement opportunities. Burton was also quoted on the topic in an interview with the American Public Media Marketplace program.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, appeared on MSNBC‘s “Last Word” discussing the 950 pages of purported Bain Capital financial information released by the Gawker website. Also, Johnston spoke on New York City’s WWRL-AM radio morning show about Mitt Romney`s taxes. A podcast is available here.

Eric Kingson, professor, School of Social Work in the Falk College, is quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about privatization of Social Security.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Los Angeles Times story about ratings woes at NBC’s “Tonight Show” and in a KNX-AM radio (Los Angeles) report on YouTube plans to stream live Republican and Democratic convention coverage, with analysis from some mainstream media. Thompson also spoke on WTVN-AM radio (Columbus, Ohio) about developments in the Lance Armstrong doping scandal and about late night television host Jimmy Kimmel’s move up to the 11:35 p.m. time slot.

Kheli R. Willetts, professor of African American Studies at The College of Arts and Sciences and executive director of Community Folk Art Center, authored a guest column in Saturday’s Post-Standard on “The Other New York: 2012” biennial exhibition and the arts as a regional economic engine.
