IVMF offers self-employment intensive workshop for veterans, transitioning military

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University will offer a two-day Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Self-Employment Intensive Training Workshop at the 2012 National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo June 24-25 in Detroit. The workshop is a collaboration between the IVMF, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs.

The workshop is available to 50 transitioning service members and veterans who are interested in starting a business. During the workshop, participants will learn whether starting a business is right for them, if their business idea is feasible and more. As part of the training, students will create a feasibility analysis deliverable that will serve as the basis for future business planning efforts. It is designed to assist would-be entrepreneurs in developing an actionable plan for subsequent efforts focused on launching a new venture.

Although there are no registration fees or tuition for the two-day intensive training program, participants will be responsible for their own transportation, as well as lodging. Those accepted to the workshop will have the opportunity to participate in portions of the full small business conference. A limited number of scholarships is available for financial assistance to cover travel and lodging for post-9/11 transitioning service members and veterans with a service-connected disability.

Once participants are accepted into the two-day workshop, they will have the opportunity to participate in the conference and expo on June 26 only. To stay for the duration of the conference, participants will need to register and pay a fee.

For more information and to apply, contact Katie Frontino, IVMF admissions coordinator, at 315-443-8791 or kfrontin@syr.edu. Those interested will receive an application via e-mail once they make initial contact with the IVMF.
