SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The national Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), founded in 2007 at the Whitman School of Management and operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), is mentioned in a Sun-Sentinel (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) article on a local day school instituting the PepsiCo Dream Machine recycling initiative, which donates to the EBV. Marketwatch also mentions the EBV in relation to fiscal support from Humana as part of its veterans initiative. Also, a Forbes article on how businesses are backing veterans by putting them to work references the Business Case for Hiring a Veteran: Beyond the Clichés, issued by the IVMF; an “ask the consultant” column in the Minneapolis Star Tribune references the EBV as a viable business resource for veterans and their families who seek guidance on how to advance from a start-up to an established business; and the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier (Iowa) profiles 2010 EBV-Purdue graduate Gerald Young and his business, Young G’s Barbeque Sauce. Also, the Toledo Blade (Ohio) highlights the EBV program in an article about returning veterans and their transition into the civilian work force. Sean McConnell, 2011 EBV-SU graduate, speaks about entrepreneurship as a pathway forward.

Additional Memorial Day coverage includes a Sunday Post-Standard column featuring the military history of former Syracuse University head football coach Ben Schwartzwalder and a Monday column on mid-1960s SU basketball player Rick Dean, decorated veterans of World War II and Vietnam, respectively.

9WSYR’s “Bridge Street” (watch clip) interviewed Jeffrey Hoone, executive director of Light Work at SU, and Kay Ellis, Hoone’s mother, onsite in the Light Work gallery to be renamed the Kathleen O. Ellis Gallery, honoring her support of the arts and setting up an endowment for artist projects and exhibitions in the gallery. The Post-Standard and the Syracuse New Times also reported on the gallery ceremony and celebration scheduled for this evening.

Media Bistro, the Post-Standard and the All Access Music Group website reported on WAER’s 65th anniversary and the opening of its own broadcasting hall of fame, inducting alumnus Ted Koppel ’60, H’82 as the first member.

SU graduate students David Chenell and Eric Cleckner in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) are featured in a Post-Standard report on their graFighters game beginning to go viral after a CNN “What’s Next” blog post highlighted their online fighting game.

Marilyn Higgins, SU vice president for community engagement and economic development, is featured in the cover story of the June 2012 issue ofToday’s CNY Womanfor her role in economic development efforts in the Near West Side, and her leadership with the Near Westside Initiative and the Connective Corridor.

SU is mentioned in a Post-Standard article on the ProLiteracy move into its new Near West Side headquarters.

The Post-Standard reviewed the new book by former SU basketball player Etan Thomas, titled “Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge.”

FACULTY QUOTES

The Christian Science Monitor published an op-ed by Mike Haynie, executive director and founder of the IVMF and a U.S. Air Force veteran, and Robert B. Murrett, a retired vice admiral in the U.S. Navy and deputy director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, on supporting veterans as a matter of national security this Memorial Day. The op-ed also appeared in Yahoo News. Additionally, Haynie commented in a Christian Science Monitor article on a deepening anti-war sentiment among post-9/11 veterans this Memorial Day, and discussed recognizing entrepreneurial opportunity and learning through experiential pedagogy in a Forbes article on teaching entrepreneurship.

The Huffington Post and the New York Times “At War” blog published an op-ed by retired U.S. Army Captain Shannon Meehan, communications specialist for the IVMF and a 2011 EBV program graduate. Meehan writes about what his Purple Heart represents to him this Memorial Day.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Guardian story on fictional politics in TV and cinema and in a Honolulu Star-Advertiser (registration required) story on cancellation of the locally produced A&E Network show, “Dog the Bounty Hunter.”

Aviva Abramovsky, associate dean for special projects and associate professor of law in the College of Law, is quoted in a Rochester Daily Record (registration required) article about proposed regulations for no-fault automobile insurance claims, designed to reduce fraud.

Kheli R. Willetts, assistant professor of African American Studies at The College of Arts and Sciences and executive director of Community Folk Art Center, authored a guest column in Saturday’s Post-Standard on the Women Build program of Syracuse Habitat for Humanity.
