SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Research on end-of-season competition between invasive and native plant species led by Jason Fridley, assistant professor of biology at The College of Arts and Sciences, is highlighted in Futurity and Post-Standard reports.

The Genesis Health Project and Luvenia W. Cowart, associate professor of practice in the Department of Public Health, Food Studies and Nutrition in the Falk College, are featured in a Sunday Post-Standard story on winners of the 2012 Post-Standard Achievement Award. The outreach effort, co-founded by Cowart, educates people through black churches and barbershops about preventable diseases and healthy lifestyles. Falk College Dean Diane Lyden Murphy is quoted.

The Greater Binghamton Business Journal and YNN reported on Syracuse University student participation and honors in the 2012 New York State Business Plan Competition. Bruce Kingma, associate provost for entrepreneurship and innovation, is quoted. The competition was held at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

The Ithaca Journal reported Danita Emma, artistic director of SU Summer Dance Intensive, will work with the National Opera and Ballet Company of Bulgaria and has been invited to teach at the Bulgarian National School of Dance Art on the Balkan Peninsula.

A Syracuse.com preview of Law Day 2012 notes College of Law participation in events to be held this year at the Landmark Theatre.

The Post-Standard reviewed the College of Visual and Performing Arts Drama Department production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” romantic comedy.

FACULTY QUOTES

Mike Haynie, executive director and founder of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, spoke with NPR‘s “Weekend Edition Sunday” on its “Homefront” series about returning National Guard and Reserve members and the new battle they face in returning to the civilian workforce. The series is spending a year with the National Guard’s 182nd Infantry Regiment as they transition from soldiers to civilians.

Jeff Harris, Dean’s Professor of Finance at the Whitman School of Management, appeared on a Business News Network (Canada) segment (watch clip) discussing oil prices and market speculation.

Rick Burton, Falk Professor of Sport Management, Falk College, is quoted in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article about the proposed new stadium for the NFL Atlanta Falcons, its anticipated construction costs and other related costs.

Mark Braiman, chemistry professor in The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted on science experiments and demonstrations in a YNN report on the recent accident in a Liverpool high school science class.
