Geoffrey C. Bowker, professor at the School of Information and Computer Science, University of California at Irvine, will present a Distinguished Colleague talk at the School of Information Studies on Wednesday, April 11.
Bowker’s research focuses on the use of web and other digital resources across a set of disciplines. He works with scholars to uncover ways in which new forms of knowledge are being generated by creative use of these digital resources. Prior to his position at UC Irvine, Bowker was professor of cyberscholarship at the iSchool at the University of Pittsburgh, and held the position of executive director at the Center for Science, Technology and Society at Santa Clara University.
His talk, “Emerging Forms of Knowledge Expression,” will explore the roots of our current system of over-publication. He will analyze recent developments that change the relationship between knowledge (encapsulated in a scientific paper) and data (stored in a database).
The talk will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Katzer Room (347) in Hinds Hall. A reception will precede the talk at 3:30 PM. All are welcome to attend.
