SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Syracuse University students studying abroad are mentioned in a New York Times article on international internships. College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate Stephen Keil is quoted.

Research on ikaite crystals and climate, led by Zunli Lu, assistant professor of earth sciences in The College of Arts and Sciences, is featured in reports by the Daily Mail (U.K.), Australian blog The Conversation and in the Global Warming.org blog.

The School of Information Studies (iSchool) offering of a graduate certificate of advanced studies in data science was reported in the Central New York Business Journal and briefly noted in a YNN (watch clip) business news segment.

The Ithaca Journal reported Danita Emma, artistic director of SU Summer Dance Intensive, was invited to work with the National Opera and Ballet Company of Bulgaria in April, as assistant choreographer and coach for “Scriabin Quintet,” a new work.

A rally for Florida teen Trayvon Martin planned for tonight on the Kenneth A. Shaw Quad was reported by 9WSYR (watch clip) and previewed in the Post-Standard. The rally is hosted by the SU Student African American Society and the Black Artist League.

Sam Morrison, iSchool junior known for his year’s worth of daily back flips, was interviewed in a Bridge Street segment (watch clip).

A new book published by Gifford Street Community Press, “I Witness: Perspectives on Policing in the Near Westside,” is the source for a Post-Standard series of print articles, videos and individual posts drawn from interviews by College of Arts and Sciences graduate student Benjamin Kuebrich. The series, examining the life and perceptions of people and police in the Near Westside, appeared in print Thursday through Saturday and continues online.

FACULTY QUOTES

A Bridge Street segment (watch clip) on horror films interviews Kendall Phillips, associate dean of research and graduate studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, about his new book “Dark Directions: Romero, Craven, Carpenter and the Modern Horror Film” (Southern Illinois University Press).

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, authored a Fox News op-ed about provocative TV titles and is quoted in Los Angeles Times and San Antonio Express-News stories on “The Hunger Games.” Thompson is also quoted in Reuters about turmoil in the anti-Kony campaign and in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on the social media buzz surrounding Pope Benedict’s visit to Cuba.

Leonard Burman, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs at the Maxwell School, is quoted in a New York Times article about U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and the Republican budget proposal.
