Maxwell School appoints new associate dean for external affairs

Lawrence R. Weinberg has been named associate dean for external affairs at the Maxwell School, effective immediately. Reporting to Dean James Steinberg in this newly created position, he will have overall responsibility for strategic planning and implementation in development; alumni relations; communications and media relations; and external relations, including international and domestic partnerships.

In making the announcement, Steinberg said: “Larry brings to the Maxwell school an extraordinary background in strategic communications and institution-building on the national and international stage. He will play a critical role in helping broaden the public’s awareness of Maxwell’s strengths in research and teaching, as well as build stronger ties with public officials, opinion-makers, alumni, supporters and prospective students.”

Weinberg, who received an M.P.A. from the Maxwell School in 1977, has more than 30 years’ experience in strategic communications, public affairs, financial resource development, event management and nonprofit management. He recently served for seven years as executive vice president of ISRAEL21c, a nonprofit communications and advocacy organization dedicated to enhancing the way in which the State of Israel and Israelis are presented to the world.

Prior to that, Weinberg was a partner in Navicom Group, a strategic communications agency with offices in Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia. He also owned his own marketing communications agency and worked for two other major public relations firms. Weinberg served as president of the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation from 1978-1982. Earlier, he worked on the staff of New York City Mayor John Lindsay and as Mayor Abraham Beame’s re-election campaign speechwriter and issues director.

Weinberg will be relocating to Syracuse from Los Angeles.
