CNN reported on the 2012 New York Conference on Peace and Cooperation in Northeast Asia, first in a series of Track II diplomacy conferences focused on issues relating to peace, cooperation, and security on the Korean Peninsula. The two-day, New York City talks were convened by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the Korean Peninsula Affairs Center (KPAC) of the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, the Center for Peace and Public Integrity at Hanshin University, the National Association of Korean Americans, and the Pacific Century Institute. Stuart Thorson, the Donald P. and Margaret Curry Gregg Professor and KPAC director at the Maxwell School, is quoted in the article.

Food Logistics reported on the PepsiCo Dream Machine Recycling Initiative, which benefits the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV). The EBV was founded at the Whitman School of Management and is operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families.

The Art21 Blog weekly roundup noted the Urban Video Project (UVP), Light Work and Everson Museum of Art presentation of the video “Flo Flow” (2011) created by William Wegman specifically for UVP.

The Madison County Courier previewed a League of Women Voters of Cazenovia event to be held March 14 with David Van Slyke, associate professor of public administration in the Maxwell School, as guest speaker. Van Slyke’s topic is “National, State, and Local Impacts of Privatization.”

Research linking whale stress to underwater noise is the centerpiece of a Post-Standard feature on Susan Parks, College of Arts and Sciences assistant professor of biology. Parks, who collaborated with the New England Aquarium’s research team in 1998 as a graduate student in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program in Oceanography, held appointments at Pennsylvania State University and Cornell University before joining SU.

Catherine Bertini, professor of public administration at the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Business Wire report about HelpAge International winning the 2012 Hilton Humanitarian Prize for the organization’s work to alleviate human suffering. Announced on International Women’s Day, the prize acknowledges the role of older women providing for families and food production across the developing world. Bertini serves as a juror for the Hilton Foundation Humanitarian Prize.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in an American Public Media Marketplace Morning Report on NBC’s lineup of television programming for Monday nights and in a Washington Post obituary for CBS television journalist Jay McMullen, an innovator in the use of hidden camera reporting.
