The Delta Zeta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Inc., in conjunction with the Student African American Society, is bringing Cornel West to the Syracuse University campus on Tuesday, March 6. A world-renowned lecturer, author, theologist and civil rights activist, West is scheduled to speak in Goldstein Auditorium, located in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are free and available at the Schine Box Office.

westWest has proven to be a consistently noteworthy figure because of his interesting views and outspoken insights in regard to race, class and gender relations in America, as well as abroad. During his lecture on campus, he will aim to answer the question, “What is the new youth movement?”

“We wanted to bring Dr. West to Syracuse because we felt that his valuable insights would benefit the wide array of people who attend the lecture,” says Kwasi Boadi, junior marketing major and vice president of the Delta Zeta Chapter. “We’re hoping his words will cause all of us to reflect on our daily lives, actions and passions in a way that will benefit us as individuals and as a community.”

West graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in three years and obtained a master’s degree and Ph.D. in philosophy at Princeton University. He has taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale, Harvard and the University of Paris.

An esteemed author, West has written 19 books. He is best known for his classic “Race Matters” (Beacon Press, 2001), “Democracy Matters” (Penguin, 2005) and his new memoir, “Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud” (Smiley Books, 2010). West is a frequent guest commentator on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “The Colbert Report,” CNN and C-SPAN, among other radio and television programs. He has a passion to communicate to a vast variety of publics in order to keep alive the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.—a legacy of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice.
