SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., L’68 spoke with WXII (Greenville, N.C.) about his prediction for Syracuse to go beyond Duke or North Carolina in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

An NBC News report on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations cites data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Also, a Post-Standard commentary about slow responses to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests made note of the grant to TRAC from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation to research data on FOIA compliance.

A report in The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.) on Louisiana State University’s Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) mentions the Syracuse University EBV program. Also, a story about military veterans and small business opportunities posted on the Business Insider website quotes Mike Haynie, executive director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families.

9WSYR and the Central New York Business Journal reported on SU students participating in a weekend brainstorming session at The Warehouse to produce ideas and data for NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge.

The Post-Standard reported on community participation in the Little Free Libraries project in Syracuse. The project is a collaboration among the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), the School of Information Studies (iSchool), the Office of Community Engagement and Economic Development and the Near Westside Initiative.

Syracuse.com reviewed the VPA Department of Drama presentation of Maxim Gorky’s “The Lower Depths.”

FACULTY QUOTES

John Torrens, assistant professor of entrepreneurial practice in the Whitman School of Management, commented on entrepreneurial behavior within corporations for a Money story about job promotions.

A New York Times op-ed about Mitt Romney’s mention of two Cadillacs in a recent Detroit speech references the work of David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, noting the potential effects of Romney’s economic plan on poor families.

Kate Brodock, executive director of digital and social media at SU, is quoted in a Bloomberg Businessweek article about applying to attend Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) events.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in two Christian Science Monitor stories about the 2012 Academy Awards: onthe broad appeal of “The Help” and on the secret voting process by Academy members. Thompson is also quoted in a Crain’s New York Business (subscription required) article on the TBS cable channel’s extension of its contract with Conan O’Brien and in the Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, Mass.) on the popularity of smaller social networking sites.

Amanda Nicholson, professor of retail practice at the Whitman School, is quoted in a Utica Observer-Dispatch article about local retailers making forays into online business.

A YNN report on urban radio in the Syracuse area quotes Roosevelt “Rick” Wright, professor in the Newhouse School.
