Peter Blanck, University Professor and chairman of the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse University, will be a featured speaker March 6 in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, at a seminar on genetic discrimination. The Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland is co-host of the seminar “Genetic Discrimination–Transatlantic Perspectives on the Case for a European Level Legal Response.”
Blanck will discuss issues surrounding the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), which is a U.S. federal law protecting against genetic discrimination in health insurance and employment. There is no European law or regulation of this nature. The event will focus on a transatlantic dialogue about the experience in the United States in this area.
In November 2011, BBI and the Centre for Disability Law and Policy sponsored an international conference on the same topic. Held in Galway, Ireland, the conference was the first of its kind in Europe. The March 6 seminar builds on the prior discussion and highlights the issue of genetic discrimination and protection of genetic privacy as one which merits close attention at the European level.
