Internationally renowned visual artist Anna Schuleit will present two free, public talks as part of a visit to the Syracuse University campus.
On Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m., Schuleit will speak in Shemin Auditorium in the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building. The lecture is part of the Department of Art’s Visiting Artist Lecture Series in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). Parking is available in SU pay lots.
On Thursday, March 1, at 6 p.m., Schuleit will give a talk as part of “Memory and Commemoration, as Fact or Fiction,” a cross-disciplinary speaker series on art, memory, community and commemoration hosted by artist Shimon Attie. The talk will be held in Watson Theater, Menschel Media Center, 316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse. Parking for the public is available for $4 in Booth Garage; parking in Booth is free for SU students, faculty and staff with a valid SU parking permit.
“Memory and Commemoration, as Fact or Fiction” is co-sponsored by VPA and the SU Humanities Center in The College of Arts and Sciences.
Schuleit studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and creative writing/book arts at Dartmouth College. Her early, large-scale installations revolved around sites of trauma and isolation: “Habeas Corpus” (2000) at Northampton State Hospital and “Bloom” (2003) at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. In 2007, she created a site-specific project for the military ruins of Lovells Island in Boston Harbor, commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. Recently, she completed “Just a Rumor,” a large painting commission at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, as well as her first set design for Ivy Baldwin Dance at the Chocolate Factory Theater in New York.
Schuleit has been a visiting artist/lecturer at MIT, Brown, Smith, Rhode Island School of Design, the New School, Brandeis, Pratt, the University of Michigan, McGill University and Bowdoin College and was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard. In 2006, she was named a MacArthur Fellow. She is now working on a collaborative painting/piano project with composer Yotam Haber, as well as her second set design for Ivy Baldwin Dance at New York Live Arts. In 2012, she will be a fellow at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Florida and a visiting artist at the Eastman School of Music.
