SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

International media coverage of research by Susan Parks, College of Arts and Sciences assistant professor of biology, linking whale stress to underwater noise, includes reports by the Associated Press, Science NOW, and The Daily Mail (U.K.). Parks, who first collaborated with the New England Aquarium’s research team in 1998 as a graduate student in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program in Oceanography, also held appointments at Pennsylvania State University and Cornell University before joining Syracuse University. Additional reports on the whale research also appeared in BBC News; UPI; CBC (Canada); The Guardian (U.K.); French Tribune; The Telegraph (U.K.); the Boston Globe; and online at Live Science, Red Orbit, Futurity, Science News, the Huffington Post, New Scientist and other sites.

Employment data from the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at SU is cited in a Fayetteville Observer (N.C.) article about a Hiring Heroes job fair.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the SU College of Law, is mentioned in an American Journalism Review article about Reuters expanding its journalism expertise and staff by recently hiring legal journalist Joan Biskupic and others.

A Boston Globe story about a Valentine’s Day ceremony at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Mass., planned to honor guide and service dogs and their owners, along with the U.S. Postal Service and their “Dogs at Work” series of stamps, notes the original illustrations for the stamps were painted by College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Professor John Thompson. Perkins is where Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan were educated.

A 9WSYR report on artwork for the new Centro transfer hub in downtown Syracuse features ceramic and glass art created by Margie Hughto, professor of ceramics in VPA’s Department of Art.

A Post-Standard feature on Black History Month focusing on Jermain Wesley Loguen draws from material written by Milton Sernett, professor emeritus of African American studies and history in The College of Arts and Sciences. Also, an Oneida Dispatch article about Peterboro community plans for 2012 programs on the history of African-Americans in the hamlet, notes Sernett’s role in developing the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and the traveling abolition museum now at SUNY Cortland for Black History Month. The article also noted Sernett will make several area presentations.

The Sunday Post-Standard featured Ruth Colvin’s recently published SU Press book “Off the Beaten Path.” Colvin, founder of Literacy Volunteers of America, taught literacy around the globe.
