SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Post-Standard, Elmira’s WETM (watch clip), and 9WSYR reported on Friday’s New York City event honoring the life and accomplishments of Syracuse University alumnus and Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis ’62 upon the 50th anniversary of Davis being the first African American to win the award. The “Pride of the Orange” Marching Band invitation to perform at the 77th Annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Gala on Monday was noted. Also, Hall of Famer Floyd Little ’67, special assistant to the athletics director in SU Athletics, was interviewed on the CBS “Tim McCarver Show” (watch clip).

The December issue of ARCHITECT features an article about School of Architecture Dean Mark Robbins as an agent of change in the area.

Data from SU’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is cited in a Sacramento Bee story on the number of deportations during President Obama’s administration. TRAC information is also cited in BusinessWeek on health care fraud.

Participation by Sharif Bey, assistant professor of art education in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education, in organizing the “Common Ground: Affrilachia! Where I’m From,” exhibition is noted in a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on the show on display at the city’s August Wilson Center.

A recent BusinessWeek “Smart Answers” column focused on entrepreneurial resources for veterans running businesses cites the portfolio of veteran outreach programs operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, which includes the EBV, EBV-F, V-WISE and Operation Endure & Grow. Raymond Toenniessen, IVMF director of operations and development, is quoted. The V-WISE program was also recently featured in a Military.com brief on the Military.com Benefits Center.

The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities was mentioned in a Sunday Post-Standard Washington Notebook piece, noting that Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle discussed the University and the program, founded in 2007 at the Whitman School of Management and operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, when she attended the annual White House holiday reception for members of Congress with President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. Buerkle told them she would like to see the program expand. Additionally, CNN’s Barbara Starr sat down with five U.S. veterans from the war in Iraq, including 2011 SU EBV graduate Shannon Meehan.

Federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation toward completion of the Syracuse Connective Corridor was reported on by the Post-Standard, YNN, CNY Central and 9WSYR (watch clip).

YNN reported on the Seventh Annual Charity Sports Auction held at SU on Saturday to benefit the new Upstate Cancer Center.

The Dec. 16 WISE Women’s Business Center roundtable on women in business, corporate positions and government decision makers, led by U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy representative Teri Coaxum, was previewed in the Central New York Business Journal. WISE director Joanne Lenweaver is quoted. WISE is an entrepreneurship product of the Whitman School of Management.

The Utica Observer Dispatch reported on participation by the School of Information Studies (iSchool) in “Ignite the Common Core with Library of Congress Primary Resource Documents,” a grant project with the Madison-Oneida BOCES School Library System.

The Post-Standard reported on SU students donating $5,000 to the Vera House through an undergraduate philanthropy course at the Maxwell School.

The Post-Standard and YNN reported on Hall of Famer Floyd Little ’67, special assistant to the athletics director in SU Athletics, has been named the 2011 recipient of the Walter Camp Football Foundation “Distinguished American” Award. Little will be honored at the foundation’s national awards banquet in New Haven, Conn., in January.

An armoire makeover idea from Ramona Albert, assistant professor in the Syracuse School of Architecture, is included in a Post-Standard story on new uses for outdated furniture.

Syracuse Stage’s performance was noted alongside an Associated Press story about theatre ticket sales and the decline of subscription sales and increase in single performance ticket sales. Syracuse Stage outperforms the trend; from 2009 to 2011 Syracuse Stage subscription sales increased 6 percent and single performance ticket sales increased 45 percent.

The Central New York Business Journal reported on the South Side Innovation Center running a pilot program next year aimed at helping entrepreneurs start businesses in the clean energy sector.

The Central New York Business Journal and Technology Review featured the news of the iSchool and Microsoft partnership in a social networking experiment.

The Society for Photographic Education Conference held at SU in November in conjunction with Light Work, was noted in the cover story of the Dec. 14-21 issue of the Syracuse New Times, an interview with art photographer Alec Soth. The conference addressed the current state of publishing for photographers and artists.

FACULTY QUOTES

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, appeared on a CNN Mediaite report about the Jon Stewart Daily Show’s influence on politics through satire. Thompson is also quoted in a WBTV News (Charlotte, N.C.) report and in the Boston Globe about Lowe’s Home Improvement ending its sponsorship for the “All-American Muslim” reality television show. And Thompson is quoted in Bloomberg on the amount of information consumed through various forms of media, and in the Newark Star Ledger on “America’s Got Talent.”

Milton Mueller, professor in the iSchool, is quoted in a Bloomberg Businessweek article on “Ammar 404” and government surveillance and interference with emails in Tunisia.

NPR Weekend Edition Saturday interviewed Meg Backus, adjunct instructor in the iSchool, about 3D printing in libraries for a segment on public libraries and “hacker spaces.” Backus and VPA Department of Foundation instructor Thomas Gokey, teach a class titled “Innovation in Libraries.”

John Wolohan, professor in the Department of Sport Management in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, authored an Athletic Business column on policies regarding school athletics and parental involvement.

“The Business Desk” PBS NewsHour question-and-answer forum discussing whether policies to slash spending drag down the economy mentions David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law. Johnston also appeared on MSNBC to discuss his recent Reuters column on tax evasion.

Menachem Z. Rosensaft, distinguished visiting lecturer at SU College of Law, authored an “On Faith” column for the Washington Post noting the 65th anniversary of United Nations recognition of genocide as a crime under international law. The column was also published in the Baltimore Jewish Times.

Hub Brown, associate dean and associate professor of broadcast and digital journalism at the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.) article on the Republican presidential candidate debates on television.

Eric Kingson, professor in the School of Social Work in the Falk College, co-authored an op-ed for The Hill on changing Social Security in the name of stimulus.
