The CBS “Early Show” featured a segment on SU alumnus, “Early Show” anchor and Orange Central co-chair Jeff Glor’s experience returning to campus for Orange Central, and interviewing Sean O’Keefe G’78 in “One-on-One with Sean O’Keefe and Jeff Glor: Service, Strategy and Space” at the Newhouse School.

CNN’s “John King USA” features the collaboration between SU and the troops from nearby Fort Drum, N.Y. The collaboration was created by William Smullen, director of the National Security Studies program in the Maxwell School, who previously was a colonel and top aide to General Colin Powell. Working with Col. Patrick Frank, Commander of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Smullen brought soldiers from Fort Drum to spend time on campus, attend football and basketball games, and share a meal with the players. In exchange, both Syracuse teams went to Fort Drum to experience life as a soldier for a day.

The Shreveport Times (La.) reported on the work of the College of Law’s Cold Case Justice Initiative to uncover new details in the cold case of Wharlest Jackson, of Natchez, Miss.

The Irish Times mentioned the genetic discrimination conference in Galway, Ireland, co-hosted by Burton Blatt Institute.

WWTI-My ABC 50 in Watertown reported on check presentations totaling $11 million in previously announced funds by PepsiCo, Humana, Walmart and JPMorgan Chase & Co. to the Institute for Veterans and Military Families and the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities at the SU Orange vs. USF football game at the Carrier Dome. Corporate representatives, IVMF executive director Mike Haynie, EBV program graduates and EBV Foundation president and founder Ted Lachowicz, an SU alumnus and three-year football letter winner, participated. 9WSYR (view clip) also did a preview of the Dome presentation and profiled Army Captain Shannon Meehan, an EBV participant who started his own business with the assistance of the bootcamp program. The EBV was also included in an Entrepreneur article on “Five Resources for Turning Vets into Entrepreneurs;” in The Street in an EBV program profile; in a Forbes Veterans Day article, in which Haynie is quoted about entrepreneurship having the ability to create and grow sustainable ventures for veterans; and in the National Catholic Reporter. Raymond Toenniessen, director of operations and development at the IVMF, and Randy Blass, EBV program director at The Florida State University, were quoted in the National Catholic Reporter story, in addition to EBV program graduates. The article also mentioned the efforts of EBV-Families in providing entrepreneurial and business training not only to wounded warriors, but to their family members and spouses as well.

9WSYR reported from the School of Information Studies (iSchool) on students’ efforts as part of the MLB.com College Challenge to develop new web and business ideas that could end up on MLB.com, Major League Baseball’s official website.

Football Hall of Famer Floyd Little ’67, special assistant to the athletics director in SU Athletics, was highlighted in a Post-Standard feature “Shirt Tales.”

CNY Central previewed the Remembrance ceremony and convocation as part Syracuse University’s Remembrance Week 2011, a weeklong series of events honoring the 270 people&#151including 35 students studying abroad through Syracuse University&#151who lost their lives in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on Dec. 21, 1988. YNN also reported from the ceremony.

The Post-Standard reported on the Kronos Quartet performing the world premiere of Newhouse School associate professor Douglas Quin’s “Polar Suite.”

Sean Kirst’s Post-Standard column profiles the work being done by Jongwoo Han, adjunct professor of political science at the Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs, and SU senior Fotini Gan to complete a Korean War digital memorial to honor the sacrifices of those in that war.

Sherburne Abbott, vice president for sustainability initiatives and University Professor of Sustainability Science & Policy, appeared with Orange Central co-chair Roosevelt (Rick) Wright on 9WSYR’s “Bridge Street” to speak about sustainability and the Orange Central program “Pioneering Innovation for Sustainability.” The “Pioneering Innovation” program was covered by WAER.

CNY Central interviewed Sean O’Keefe G’87 at the Orange Central event “One-on-One with Sean O’Keefe and Jeff Glor: Service, Strategy and Space.” Prior to the event, O’Keefe appeared on WSTM and 9WSYR to discuss his experiences and his return to campus for the weekend. Jeff Glor ’97, co-chair of Orange Central, also appeared on WSTM to talk about his role as CBS “Early Show” anchor and returning to campus.

The Post-Standard highlighted the Saturday book signing by VPA alumni Taye Diggs and Shane Evans, as well as other SU alumni authors, at the Syracuse University Bookstore, as part of Orange Central.

The Post-Standard previewed Sunday’s Say Yes to Education event in Syracuse that featured VPA alumni Taye Diggs and Shane Evans. And the Post-Standard and YNN reported from the event that included a book signing, book reading and interaction with Syracuse City School students, as part of Orange Central.

YNN reported on the “The Molting of Walt” public sculpture presentation by Brendan Rose, Syracuse public artist in residence. “Walt” is now located at West Fayette and Walton streets in Syracuse’s Armory Square. Students from VPA’s industrial design class partnered with the city’s Public Artist in Residence program.

Syracuse.com highlighted comments made at this past week’s Thursday Morning Roundtable panel discussion, which was a conversation about Tuesday’s general election by members of WCNY’s “Ivory Tower Half Hour.”

FACULTY QUOTES

Robert McClure, professor of political science and public affairs at the Maxwell School, is quoted in the Washington Post on GOP candidate Herman Cain’s recent media attention.

Sharif Bey, assistant professor of art education in VPA and the School of Education, is included in an Art Daily article for co-adjudicating a juried portion of the exhibition “Common Ground: Affrilachia! Where I’m From,” at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture.

Robert Thompson director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, commented on the FCC and community standards in a WSYR-AM report on the agency’s recent ruling on the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs,spoke with YNN about next steps for the village of Camillus after a recent vote maintained its solvency.
